The San River in south-east Poland is unbelievable; it seems like the end of a fly fishing journey. Here is the finest grayling fishing surviving in Old Europe. The main River San is very densely populated by grayling, from the dams at Lake Solina all the way to the confluence with Poland's largest river, the Vistula. Grayling are also present in most of the tributaries of the River San, though notably in much The main river is also home to enormous, predatory taimen (also known as Danube salmon or huchen). These have been caught in recent years up to 30kg. They are rarely caught on fly, though it is fairly common to experience a devastating taimen strike to a hooked trout or grayling. Last October we watched in awe as a taimen mauled a shoal of small grayling on the shallows at Laczki. The most prized fishing in Eastern Europe is the upper reaches of the San below the lakes, on the edge of the National Park. This is a place the Poles refer to as El Once experienced, the fly-fisher redefines his expectations, his perception of what is possible and his whole sport. We have access to all parts of the San and its many tributaries. All our lodges are close to the fishing, while Riverside, as its name suggests, is actually on the banks of the San in a fantastic fishing location. Some of the tributaries and lower river requires a guided four-wheel drive excursion. The countryside, in the Park and on most reaches of the river below, is as breathtaking as the fishing. |
